About me.
I'm Ben Smith, owner and head coach at LegSmith. I'm a Dad, Coach, College Professor and Bike Racer. I started bike racing in 1987. I broke my ankle skateboarding in the middle of track season. My girlfriend was ticked off because I had to wear Frankenstein shoes to the prom to fit over my cast. My mom was ticked off because I rotated out of the heavy chore duties for 2 months. My track coach was ticked off because he lost half his pole vault team. I was ticked off because, well, no more skateboarding. Then my doctor suggested I borrow my Dad's 10-speed to stay in shape while the ankle healed. 3 weeks later I drained my savings account and bought a road bike; no more pole vault, no more skateboarding for me. Competitive cycling has been with me ever since.
During my cycling salad days back in the early 1990s I turned from road racing, where I won two state championships and raced in college for the Claremont Colleges team, to mountain bike and then cyclocross racing. I am currently the 2013 Florida state Masters 35+ cyclocross champion. I have raced in most parts of the country and abroad at the local, regional, national and World Cup levels. My racing resume is here:
I've been coaching since 1991. If you're interested in hearing about LegSmith coaching feel free to contact me.
